A 7.4kW wall charger draws 32A and adds around 50km of range per hour — roughly five times a standard 10A portable. For most EVs that means a full charge overnight regardless of how empty you arrive home. Three-phase 22kW units charge faster again, but only if your property has three-phase supply and your car’s onboard charger accepts it; many EVs cap AC charging at 7kW or 11kW, so check your model before paying for the extra capacity.

Tethered units have the cable permanently attached — plug in and walk away. Socketed units take any Type 2 cable, or a Type 2 to Type 1 cable for Japanese imports.

Smart models add WiFi, app scheduling, dynamic load balancing and solar integration. Dynamic load balancing matters in New Zealand: plenty of homes run a 63A supply, and a 32A charger takes a serious slice of that. Load balancing throttles the charger when the oven and heat pump are running rather than tripping the main.
