This is our universal smart EV wall charger, with more than 60 customer reviews averaging 4.92 out of 5. It combines fast 7.4 kW home charging with app control, solar charging and dynamic load balancing.
Because the cable can be unplugged from the charger, you can replace it if it becomes damaged, store it securely when it is not being used, or change to a different cable when you change vehicles. It is also a good option if your vehicle already came with a suitable public charging cable.
At its maximum 32 A output, the charger can add up to around 50 km of driving range per hour.
A standard 8 A portable charger typically adds around 10 km per hour, so most EV owners can plug in at night and wake up to a charged vehicle.
App control and charging schedules
The Apple and Android compatible app gives you control over when and how your vehicle charges. You can:
- Set multiple charging schedules
- Charge during cheap night rates or free power hours
- Adjust the charging current
- Start and stop charging remotely
- Lock the charger to help prevent unauthorised use
- View current and historical energy usage
- Change from Solar to Manual mode
The monthly energy summary is particularly useful when charging a work vehicle at home and claiming back the electricity cost.
You do not need to use the app for everyday charging. The charger can be set to plug-and-charge mode, where charging begins automatically when the vehicle is connected. It can also be started and stopped using the two included RFID cards.
Wi-Fi is required for the initial app setup and remote app functions. Once configured, the charger can continue operating in plug-and-charge or RFID mode without a Wi-Fi connection.
Charge using excess solar
In ECO mode, the charger monitors the power flowing to and from your home. When excess solar would otherwise be exported to the grid, the charger automatically starts and adjusts its output to direct that available energy into your vehicle.
As your solar production and household electricity use change throughout the day, the charger increases or decreases the charging current to match the available surplus. This allows you to use more of your own solar energy instead of exporting it at a lower buyback rate.
The CT clamp required for solar charging and dynamic load balancing is included with the charger. It must be correctly installed and configured by your electrician.
Solar charging is included as a standard feature. There is no additional subscription or paid software upgrade required to activate it.
See our solar EV charging guide for a more detailed explanation of how the system works.
Dynamic load balancing
Many New Zealand homes have a 63 A electrical supply, while an EV charger operating at 32 A can use a significant portion of the available capacity.
When the included CT clamp is installed at the main switchboard, the charger monitors the total current being used by the property. If appliances such as the oven, heat pump, hot-water cylinder or spa push the household load towards the configured limit, the charger automatically reduces its output.
Once the household load drops, the charger increases its charging rate again. This allows the vehicle to charge as quickly as the available electrical capacity permits while helping prevent the main breaker from tripping.
Dynamic load balancing is particularly useful if you charge during a free power period and want to run other high-powered appliances at the same time.
Charging speed
At its maximum output of 32 A or 7.4 kW, this charger can add up to around 50 km of driving range per hour. The actual charging speed depends on the vehicle’s onboard AC charger and driving efficiency.
The charger communicates with the vehicle, and the vehicle only draws the amount of power it can safely accept. For example, a vehicle with a 6.6 kW onboard charger will charge at up to approximately 6.6 kW, even when connected to this 7.4 kW charger. Most EVs can be charged from low to full overnight, making it easy to complete the charge during an off-peak electricity period.
Calculate the approximate charging time for your vehicle with our EV charge-time calculator, or find your model in our charging guides by vehicle.

Installation
This is a hard-wired 32 A EV charger and must be installed by a registered electrician.
The charger includes AC leakage protection and built-in 6 mA DC leakage detection. This means a Type B RCD is not required. It can be installed using a suitable Type A RCBO, or an MCB with a Type A RCD.
Compared with chargers that require a Type B RCD, this can save several hundred dollars in protection equipment and installation costs.
The maximum charging current can be limited using switches inside the charger down to 16a if the full 32 A output is not available or required.
A printed Supplier Declaration of Conformity is included for your electrician.
For a straightforward installation close to the switchboard, many customers report installation costs of approximately $500 to $700. Longer cable runs, switchboard upgrades, difficult access, trenching and other site-specific work can increase the price, so we recommend obtaining a quote from your electrician.
We can also help locate an installer in your area. Contact us with your location for assistance.
Your electrician may also require our EV charger isolator and RCBO installer combination. Ordering the installation components with the charger can reduce installation delays and save the electrician a separate trip to the wholesaler.
Home Assistant integration
Advanced users can integrate the charger with Home Assistant using the HACS Tuya Local integration. See our Home Assistant integration guide for setup information.
Common questions
Does the charger come with a cable?
The socket-only option does not include a charging cable. You can use an existing compatible cable or add a Type 2 to Type 2 or Type 2 to Type 1 cable when ordering.
Will it work with my vehicle?
Yes, provided the correct cable is used. The Type 2 socket works with nearly all EVs and PHEVs available in New Zealand.
Use a Type 2 to Type 2 cable for nearly all New Zealand-new vehicles, including current models from BYD, Tesla, MG, Kia, Hyundai, Ford and Volkswagen. Use a Type 2 to Type 1 cable for many Japanese imports, including older Nissan Leafs.
Why choose a socket charger?
A socket charger gives you more flexibility. You can change the charging cable if you change vehicles, replace only the cable if it becomes damaged, take the cable with you, or store it securely when it is not being used.
It is also a good choice if your vehicle already came with a compatible Type 2 public charging cable.
Does the charger work without Wi-Fi?
Yes. Once configured, the charger can operate in plug-and-charge mode without an active Wi-Fi connection. The included RFID cards can also be used to start and stop charging. Wi-Fi is required for initial app setup and remote app functions.
It will default to Bluetooth if no wifi is avaiable.
Does my vehicle need to accept 7.4 kW?
No. The charger communicates with the vehicle, and the vehicle draws only the amount of AC power it can accept. A vehicle with a lower onboard AC charging limit will simply charge at that lower rate.
Do I need solar panels?
No. Solar charging is optional. Without solar panels, you can still use fast charging, app control, scheduled charging, energy monitoring and dynamic load balancing.
If you install solar later, the charger is already equipped to use the solar ECO function. There is no separate subscription or costly software upgrade required to activate it.
Can it charge entirely from solar?
Yes, provided there is enough excess solar generation available to meet the minimum charging current required by the vehicle. The charger can automatically start, stop and adjust its output as the available solar surplus changes.
Can the charger be installed outside?
Yes. The IP54-rated enclosure is suitable for indoor or outdoor installs in all New Zealand conditions.
Is the charger EECA approved?
Yes. This model is included on the EECA Approved Smart Charger List for residential single-phase EV chargers.
Where is the charger made?
Our chargers are manufactured overseas to our specifications. They are stocked and supported from Christchurch, and you deal directly with Smart EV Chargers for technical assistance and the full three-year warranty.

Very responsive and knowledgeable service, the product was dispatched promptly with quick delivery (even for an RD address). Good reponse time to questions from our electrician during installation.
Great value – as our car came with an extra charging cable it made sense to save money and buy the outlet only. Saved more than half the price of an imported charger we were quoted by another provider.
Charger is working well and preforming exactly as expected.
Highly recommended.

Marcus –
Excellent charger, had for nearly 3 years with no issues, great value for money and responsive aftersales support from Ross! Dynamic Load Balancing is fantastic to prevent overloading. Sparky couldn’t quite get the solar CT clamps working properly but this probably is mostly due to the lack of space in our switchboard (even though we went for the biggest residential option at the time!).
Ross –
Thanks for the good review, glad its still operating as it should after 3 years
Grayson H. –
This is a great basic smart charger for an EV, the construction is good and getting it mounted and installed was easy. I purchased this instead of importing an OpenEVSE, as that did not have SDoC and this charger does.
Strangely it didn’t include insulation clamps inside the charger to clamp the TPS and any Ethernet cable, but I worked around it.
I did add this charger to Home Assistant, the staff were helpful in passing on how to do this, the only down side of this is that the charger doesn’t pass on via OCPP the CT clamp current readings for mains or solar, nor can you then manage the DLB from here.
That all has to be done via the Tuya App, which somewhat stops it being truly local only control natively (unless you use Local Tuya).
Overall I do recommend this charger as the price point is fantastic for what you get.
Jeffrey Healy –
Very good sevice-not installed yet
