This is our most popular home wall charger, with more than 90 customer reviews averaging 4.97 out of 5. It combines fast 7.4 kW charging with app control, solar charging and dynamic load balancing, while remaining simple enough to use without the app.
At its full 32 A output, it can add up to around 50 km of driving range per hour, compared with approximately 10 km per hour from a standard 8 A portable charger. For most EV owners, that means plugging in at night and waking up to a charged car.
The attached 6 m Type 2 cable suits nearly all New Zealand-new EVs and PHEVs. For a Japanese import with a Type 1 charging port, or if you would prefer a socket that allows the cable to be changed, choose our untethered wall charger.
App control and charging schedules
The Apple and Android compatible app gives you control over when and how your car charges. You can:
- Set multiple charging schedules
- Make use of cheap night rates or free power hours
- Adjust the charging current
- Start and stop charging remotely
- Lock the charger to prevent unauthorised use
- View current and historical energy usage
The monthly energy summary is particularly useful when charging a work vehicle at home and claiming back the electricity cost.
You do not need to use the app for everyday charging. The charger can be set to plug-and-charge mode, where it starts automatically whenever the vehicle is connected. It can also be started and stopped using the two included RFID cards.
Charge using excess solar
In ECO mode, the charger monitors the power flowing to and from your home. When excess solar would otherwise be exported to the grid, the charger automatically starts and adjusts the charging rate to direct that available energy into your car.
As your solar generation or household consumption changes, the charger increases or decreases its output to match the available surplus. This helps you use more of your own solar instead of exporting it at a lower buyback rate.
The CT clamp required for solar charging and load balancing is included with the charger. See our solar EV charging guide for a more detailed explanation.
Dynamic load balancing
Many New Zealand homes have a 63 A electrical supply, while a charger operating at 32 A can use a significant portion of that available capacity.
When the included CT clamp is installed at the main switchboard, the charger monitors the total current being used by your home. If appliances such as the oven, heat pump, hot-water cylinder or spa push the household load towards the configured limit, the charger automatically reduces its charging rate.
Once the household load drops, the charger increases its output again. This allows the EV to charge as quickly as the available electrical capacity permits while helping prevent the main breaker from tripping.
Charging speed
At its maximum output of 32 A or 7.4 kW, this charger can add up to around 50 km of range per hour. The actual rate depends on the vehicle, its onboard AC charger.
Most EVs can be charged from low to full overnight, making it easy to complete the charge during off-peak electricity periods.
Calculate the approximate charging time for your vehicle with our EV charge-time calculator, or find your model in our EV charging guides by vehicle.

Installation
This is a hard-wired EV charger and must be installed by a registered electrician.
The charger includes AC leakage protection and 6 mA DC leakage detection. This means a Type B RCD is not required
It can be installed using a suitable Type A RCBO, or an MCB with a Type A RCD. Compared with chargers that require a Type B device, this can save several hundred dollars in protection equipment and installation costs.
The maximum charging current can be limited using switches inside the charger where the full 32 A output is not available or required.
The supply cable can enter through the bottom or rear of the enclosure, allowing it to be concealed when the charger is mounted over the cable entry.
A printed Supplier Declaration of Conformity is included for your electrician.
For a straightforward installation close to the switchboard, many customers report installation costs of approximately $500-$700.
Longer cable runs, switchboard upgrades, difficult access and other site-specific work can increase the price, so we recommend obtaining a quote from your electrician.
We can also help locate an installer in your area. Contact us with your location for assistance.
Your electrician may also require our EV charger isolator and RCBO installer combination. Ordering it with the charger can save install costs.
Home Assistant integration
Advanced users can integrate the charger with Home Assistant using the HACS Tuya Local integration. See our Home Assistant integration guide for setup information.
Common questions
Does the charger work without Wi-Fi?
Yes. In plug-and-charge mode, the charger starts whenever the vehicle is connected, without needing Wi-Fi or the app. The included RFID cards can also be used to start and stop charging. Wi-Fi is only needed for app setup and remote app features. If there is no WIFI after setup it will default to Bluetooth.
Will it work with my vehicle?
The attached Type 2 cable fits nearly all New Zealand-new EVs and PHEVs, including current models from BYD, Tesla, MG, Kia, Hyundai, Ford, Volkswagen and many other manufacturers.
Some Japanese imports, including older Nissan Leafs, have a Type 1 charging port. For these vehicles, choose the socket version and use a Type 2-to-Type 1 cable.
See our EV plug and socket guide if you are unsure which connection your vehicle uses.
Does my car need to accept 7.4 kW?
No. The charger communicates with the vehicle, and the vehicle draws only the amount of AC power it can accept. A vehicle with a lower onboard AC charging limit will simply charge at that lower rate.
Do I need solar panels?
No. Solar charging is optional. Without solar, you can still use fast charging, app control, scheduled charging, energy monitoring and dynamic load balancing. The charger will also be ready if you install solar later and can divert solar with out a costly software udpate other brands offer.
Can the charger be installed outside?
Yes. The IP54-rated enclosure is suitable for outdoor wall mounting in all New Zealand conditions.
Where is the charger made?
Our chargers are manufactured overseas to our specifications. We provide local support from Christchurch. You deal directly with Smart EV Chargers for technical help and the full three-year warranty.
Local stock and support
These chargers are stocked in Christchurch and are usually delivered within approximately two working days after dispatch to most New Zealand addresses.

Excellent Service – take the suggestion and buy the isolator switch and RCD device when you purchase. Watch out for the installers – not related to this purchase but a warning it shouldn’t cost more than $500 ish – I got two quotes for over $1000 and couldn’t see how they justified that.

Great charger. Install was easy and $300, and electrician found it simple. The ‘manual’ is pretty much devoted to installation and the app, with average quality English, and little explanation for what flashing lights mean etc, but it is a pretty simple device.

$465 to install, right next to an interior switch board, which made it easy. Plug it in & schedule a charging time on night rate power.

After lots of research, I’m very happy with the product quality and ease of use. Our electrical contractor also commented how simple it was to install. With it’s small size on the wall, 6M cable, capacity to feed into a solar supply in the future and ability to be worked through the app, it does everything I wanted and more. So glad I chose this EV charger.
