Which cable you need comes down to your car’s socket. New Zealand-new EVs and PHEVs use Type 2, so a Type 2 to Type 2 cable is what plugs you into public and destination chargers. Japanese imports — Leaf, Outlander PHEV, Prius Prime — use Type 1, and need a Type 2 to Type 1 cable to connect to the same public network.

The other choice is power rating. A 32A 7kW single-phase cable suits nearly every home and most public AC chargers. A 22kW three-phase cable only helps if both your car and the charge point support three-phase — worth having if you regularly use 22kW destination chargers, unnecessary if you don’t.

Cable length: 5m suits most people’s needs. 8m, 10m or 15m are useful at home if the car parks nose-in some days and reversed others, or at public stations where the bay layout doesn’t cooperate.
