22kW Type 2 to Type 2 EV charging cable – 5m or 8m

This is the cable that lets your EV use New Zealand’s public AC chargers and any socketed home or workplace wall charger.
One Type 2 (Mennekes) plug goes into your car, the other into the charger. It is rated for 32A per phase, so it will charge at the fastest AC rate your car supports, from 7.4kW single-phase up to 22kW three-phase, with no adapters and no fuss.

Most NZ public AC chargers, including the majority of ChargeNet, council and shopping-centre units, are “BYO cable” sockets. If you don’t carry one of these, you can’t use them. We stock both lengths in Christchurch and ship nationwide for $14.

Choose your cable length: 5m or 8m

5m Type 2 to Type 2 cable. The right choice for most drivers. 5 metres reaches from a standard public charger bay to either side of the car, and suits a home wall charger mounted within a few metres of where you park. It coils up small and lives in the boot.

8m Type 2 to Type 2 cable. Choose 8 metres if your charge port is on the opposite side of the car from the charger, if you park nose-in on a long driveway, or if you share a charger between two parking spaces. The extra 3 metres is the difference between “just reaches” and “always reaches”. It is noticeably heavier to coil, so only go to 8m if you need it.

Not sure? Measure from the charger socket to your car’s charge port along the path the cable will actually take, around the car rather than through it, and add a metre of slack.

Single-phase and three-phase, up to 22kW

The cable carries all three phases and are backwards compitable with all single phase vehicles.

Your charging speed is set by the slowest of the three links: the charger, the cable and the car’s onboard charger.
This cable is never the bottleneck. A 22kW cable on a 7kW car charges at 7kW, and when you upgrade to a three-phase car it is ready for 11kW or 22kW without buying another cable.

Which EVs does this cable fit?

Every new EV and PHEV sold in New Zealand uses a Type 2 charge port for AC charging, so this cable fits them all.

Check your own model’s onboard charger rating before expecting 11kW or 22kW; a few models vary by trim and year. Any figure above 7.4kW needs a three-phase charger as well as a three-phase car.

Where can I use this cable?

  • Public AC chargers. ChargeNet AC units, council and supermarket chargers, hotel and motel destination chargers. Most of these in NZ are socket-only and need your own cable.
  • Socketed home wall chargers. Any 7kW or 22kW wall unit with a Type 2 socket instead of a tethered lead, including our own socketed Smart EV Chargers models.
  • Workplace and apartment car parks. Shared chargers are almost always socketed so each driver brings a cable.
  • Travelling. Keep it in the boot and you can charge at any Type 2 socket in New Zealand or Australia.

This cable is for AC charging only. DC fast chargers (CCS2 and CHAdeMO, 50kW and up) have their own tethered leads and don’t use it. It also doesn’t plug into a household wall socket; for that you need a portable charger with an in-built control box.

Frequently asked questions

Should I buy the 5m or the 8m Type 2 cable? Buy 5m unless you know you need more. 5m covers a normal public charger bay and a home charger within a few metres of the car. Choose 8m if your charge port ends up on the far side of the car from the charger, or you share one charger across two spaces.

My car only charges at 7kW. Is a 22kW cable a waste? No. The cable simply carries what the car asks for, so a 7kW car charges at 7kW. The 22kW rating means the same cable works at full speed when you move to a three-phase car, and it is accepted by every public AC charger regardless of its output.

Will this work on an 11kW or 22kW three-phase charger? Yes. It is wired for all three phases at 32A, so it supports 11kW (16A three-phase) and 22kW (32A three-phase) chargers as well as 7kW single-phase units.

Can I plug this into a normal household power point? No. Both ends are Type 2 plugs. To charge from a standard 3-pin socket you need a portable EV charger with its own control box.

Does it fit a Tesla? Yes. Every Tesla sold new in New Zealand (Model 3, Model Y, Model S and Model X) has a Type 2 charge port and charges at up to 11kW AC with this cable.

Is it OK to leave the cable outside or use it in the rain? Yes. The plugs are IP54 rated and the connection is weather-sealed when plugged in at both ends. Don’t leave the plug ends lying in standing water when not in use.

Can I use it at ChargeNet and other NZ public chargers? Yes. NZ public AC chargers use a Type 2 socket and expect you to bring your own cable. This is the cable for that job. DC fast chargers have their own attached leads and don’t need it.

What warranty does it come with? 3 Years
