The VIOFO A229 Plus 2CH is a complete two-channel dash cam combining a 2K front camera and a 2K rear camera — both equipped with Sony STARVIS 2 sensors and HDR. It’s the most affordable way to get genuine STARVIS 2 image quality on both front and rear in your vehicle.
2K Front. 2K Rear. Both with Sony STARVIS 2.
Most budget 2-channel dash cams pair a decent front camera with a much weaker rear camera, often using cheap, no-name sensors that produce noisy, low-detail footage. The A229 Plus 2CH refuses that compromise — both channels use the Sony STARVIS 2 IMX675, the same 5MP sensor used in the rear cameras of VIOFO’s flagship A229 Pro and A329S models.
The result is sharp, low-noise footage from both ends of your vehicle, with HDR active on both channels for balanced exposure in tricky lighting.
- Front: 2K (2560×1440) with HDR — Sony STARVIS 2 IMX675
- Rear: 2K (2560×1440) with HDR — Sony STARVIS 2 IMX675
Why 2K Is Enough?
4K dash cams get the marketing attention, but 2K with a Sony STARVIS 2 sensor is genuinely sufficient for most real-world incidents. At normal traffic distances you can read licence plates, identify drivers, and document road signs clearly. The image quality at 2K with a flagship sensor is better than 4K on older or cheaper sensors.
The case for upgrading to 4K is specifically about reading plates of vehicles further down the road, or capturing fine detail at highway speeds. For day-to-day commuting, parking damage protection, and standard incident recording, 2K with STARVIS 2 is excellent.
5GHz Wi-Fi & Direct USB-C Transfer
Built-in 5GHz dual-band Wi-Fi lets you preview and download footage to your phone wirelessly via the VIOFO app. For larger transfers, you can also connect your phone directly to the camera with a USB-C cable for speeds up to 20MB/s — useful when you need to share dash cam footage immediately after an incident.
Quad-Mode GPS
The A229 Plus features an advanced Quad-Mode GPS module that connects to GPS, BEIDOU, GALILEO, and GLONASS satellite networks simultaneously, giving you faster lock and better positioning accuracy than single-system GPS. Speed, time, and route data are embedded directly into your recordings for accurate incident documentation.
Smart Voice Control
Hands-free voice commands let you lock footage, take a photo, start or stop recording, or toggle Wi-Fi without taking your hands off the wheel.
Three Parking Modes (with HK4 Hardwire Kit)
When paired with the optional HK4 hardwire kit, the A229 Plus 2CH supports three parking modes:
- Auto Event Detection (Buffered): saves 15 seconds before and 30 seconds after any impact
- Time-Lapse: records continuously at reduced frame rate to conserve storage and battery
- Low Bitrate Continuous: normal recording at reduced bitrate for full coverage
The HK4 connects to your fuse box for constant power and includes low-voltage cutoff to protect your car battery.
Built to Last
The A229 Plus uses a supercapacitor rather than a lithium battery for internal power, delivering stable performance from -10°C to +65°C and a significantly longer service life — no battery degradation, no swelling, no replacement cycle. Particularly important in NZ summers where windscreens can hit 70°C+ in direct sun.
Expandable to 3-Channel
The A229 Plus 2CH can be upgraded to a 3-channel system later by adding the optional 1080P infrared interior camera module. The cabin camera connects directly to the front unit and is auto-detected — no firmware changes needed. Useful if you decide later you want passenger compartment monitoring.
How It Compares
The A229 Plus 2CH sits at the entry point of the A229 series 2-channel range. Quick comparison:
- vs VS1: Plus adds the rear camera (VS1 is front-only) and the same STARVIS 2 quality on both channels
- vs A229 Pro 2CH: Pro upgrades the front camera to 4K (vs Plus’s 2K) — choose Pro if forward licence plate evidence at distance matters; choose Plus to save and get the same rear camera quality
- vs A229 Ultra 2CH: Ultra upgrades both channels to 4K — choose Ultra for premium image quality on both ends; choose Plus for budget-conscious dual-channel coverage
Ideal For
- First-time buyers who want a dual-channel dash cam without paying flagship prices
- Second vehicles, partner’s cars, or family member’s vehicles where premium specs aren’t needed
- Drivers who want STARVIS 2 image quality on both channels but don’t need 4K front capture
- Owners of older or budget vehicles where a $500+ dash cam doesn’t fit the value equation
In the Box
- VIOFO A229 Plus front camera unit with screen
- 2K rear camera with 6m rear cable (8m and 10m options available)
- Car charger and mounting hardware
A microSD card (U3/V30 recommended, sold separately 128GB 256GB 512GB) is required. For full parking mode functionality, the VIOFO HK4 hardwire kit is recommended
