Home charging options for the VW ID.4

The ID.4, straight from the factory, includes a Type 2 8A charger designed to provide an 8-amp charging rate. This charger is often referred to as an “emergency charger” due to its extended charging time of 46 hours to fully charge the standard range model from 0 to 100%.

When fully charged, the ID.4 boasts an impressive range of 519 kilometres. If you’re looking to speed up your charging process at home, there are a few options available

  1. The 16A T2 charger with the Blue Cee plug. Great if you have a 16A socket, this will charge twice the speed of the factory charger.
  2. The best option are the wall mount chargers that will add around 40km of range per hour of charging. All our wall mount chargers are compatible with the ID4

ID.4 Charge times

While the charger included with the car is labelled as an “Emergency charger,” it could still suit your needs if you are not travelling many km each day. The standard charger provides an approximate 10km of range per hour, whereas a wall charger offers a quicker 40km per hour.

The ID.4 has an onboard 11kW charger. This means if you have 3 phase power available at home you can use the Tron charger to charge at 11kW

Estimated charging time below, from 20% charge up to 100%. Most people do not return home with 0% charge so we have allowed the 20% buffer.

Public charging the ID.4

There are two main ways of public charging the ID.4 in public. One of these is using ac power via a Type 2 charger. The other way is using dc fast charging.

D.C Fast charging. This connects via the Type 2 CCS port in the car and will charge the car from 0 to 80% in 1.5 hours on a 50kW charger and 40min on a 124kW charger.
No need to bring a cable with D.C charging as the charging station has this hard wired. To use these public stations download the following apps to

BP EV charging
Meridian EV charging App

Type 2 Public Charging. These chargers you find a super markets, malls, gyms, hotels and public carparks. Most of these chargers you need to bring your own cable.

Cable: We recommend a Type 2 to Type 2 22kW cable to make use of the 11kW charging.

Note Some public charges have a Type 2 hard wired so a cable is not needed 100% of the time. If you already have a Type 1 charger at home we can supply an adapter so you can charge your car and Japanese import EV with the same charger.
