Best Home Wall Chargers for the Volvo EX90

Fast, safe overnight charging — and future-proof for your next EV

The Volvo EX90 charges at up to 11kW on AC. That means a quality 7kW / 32A wall charger is the sweet spot for NZ homes:
the car controls the maximum speed, so a 7kW wallbox delivers the EX90’s full AC rate while keeping you covered for future EVs.

Choose your home charging style:
Tethered wall charger (fixed cable): fastest “grab-and-go” every day
Untethered wall charger (socket only): use your own Type 2 cable — great if you swap between EVs or travel and want to use the cable on public chargers.

Public charging with the Volvo EX90 (NZ)

In New Zealand you’ll mainly use two public charging types:
DC fast chargers for road trips/top-ups, and Type 2 AC chargers commonly found at supermarkets, malls, hotels and public car parks.

DC fast charging
The EX90 supports up to 250kW DC and is quoted at 10–80% in ~30 minutes on a compatible rapid charger (conditions apply).
For longer trips, it’s usually faster to do multiple short sessions rather than charging very high at one stop.

Type 2 AC chargers
Many AC public chargers are “bring-your-own-cable”. PlugShare is great for checking what’s available before you arrive.

Volvo EX90 home charging FAQs (NZ)

What is the best home wall charger for the Volvo EX90?

A 7kW (32A) wall charger is the best all-round option for most NZ homes. The EX90 will charge at up to 11kW on AC if you have 3 phase power at home.

Yes — but it’s slow. 8A charging is best as a backup. If you want reliable overnight charging, a wallbox is usually the best upgrade.

No. The EX90’s will charge at 7kW a.c on single phase. This is fine for most peoples needs.

A 22kW 22kW Type 2 to Type 2 cable is the common solution for NZ AC destination charging.
