7.4kW smart wall chargers

A single-phase 7.4kW (32A) charger fills the RAV4 PHEV’s 22.7kWh battery in around 3 hours from 10–100% — comfortably overnight, or during an evening at home. This is the sensible choice for the vast majority of RAV4 PHEV owners.

Buy the tethered version if: you want the simplest everyday option — pull in, plug in, done.
Buy the socket (untethered) version if: you want a tidier wall unit, already own a Type 2 cable, or share the charger between vehicles.

Load monitoring prevents overloading your mains while charging. Solar diversion varies charging power to match your solar generation. Scheduling via the free app makes the most of off-peak rates — particularly worthwhile on a PHEV you may plug in daily.

Fastest home option

Three-phase chargers — 11kW

These are 22kW-capable three-phase wall chargers; the RAV4 PHEV draws up to its 11kW AC limit, taking a 10–100% charge down to around 2.1 hours. With a battery this size, three-phase is a convenience rather than a necessity — worth it mainly if you already have three-phase power and want to top up quickly between trips.

Buy this if: your property already has three-phase from the street, or you’re also charging a larger EV.

Check your switchboard for a main breaker with three switches joined as one, or Phase 1/2/3 labels.

About the RAV4 Plug-in Hybrid

Three grades, one charging setup

The plug-in hybrid joins the new-generation RAV4 alongside the conventional hybrid, in GXL (front-wheel drive, 201kW), XSE (E-Four all-wheel drive, 227kW) and GR SPORT grades.

Charging is identical across the range: a 22.7kWh battery, Type 2 inlet on the front left, an 11kW onboard charger and 50kW DC fast charging — unusual for a plug-in hybrid. Toyota New Zealand expects real-world electric range of roughly 90–100km, which covers most daily driving on electricity alone. When the battery is depleted the car simply runs as a hybrid.

Portable charger for the RAV4 PHEV

A portable Type 2 charger suits the RAV4 PHEV better than it does most electric cars. A 10A unit plugs into a standard household socket and fills the battery in around 10 hours — a genuine overnight charge, not just a top-up. A 16A model on a correctly installed blue caravan-style socket does it in about 6 hours.

Buy the 10A if: you plug in overnight at home, or want a travel charger for the bach and family visits.
Buy the 16A if: you have (or will install) a dedicated caravan-style socket and want a faster portable option.

A wall charger is still the better long-term choice — faster, fixed in place, and with scheduling and solar features. Any portable charger for the RAV4 PHEV must have a Type 2 vehicle connector.

What charging cable does the RAV4 PHEV need?

Vehicle-side plug: Type 2. You’ll need your own Type 2 to Type 2 cable for public AC chargers and for any untethered (socket-only) wall charger. We recommend 5m, which reaches the front-left charge port from most parking positions.

Choose the three-phase 22kW-rated cable. A single-phase 7kW cable fits, but won’t carry the car’s full 11kW on a three-phase AC charger.

DC fast chargers have their cables attached, so nothing extra is needed there.

Public charging with the RAV4 PHEV

DC fast charging (CCS2): rare on a plug-in hybrid, and useful on longer trips — up to 50kW, taking the battery from 10% to 80% in around 30 minutes. That’s roughly a coffee stop for another 60–70km of electric running instead of burning petrol. DC chargers have cables attached.

No. If the battery is empty it runs as a conventional hybrid. But the electric range only saves you fuel if you actually charge it, which is why a home charger is the difference between a plug-in hybrid that pays for itself and one that carries its battery around unused.

Up to 50kW via CCS2 — 10–80% in about 30 minutes. DC fast charging is unusual on a plug-in hybrid and is aimed at extending electric running on longer journeys.

All grades include a 1500W AC inverter with a socket in the cargo area, so no V2L adapter is required. Keep the combined appliance load under 1500W.
