The VIOFO A229 Ultra-W 2CH is a true 4K dash cam paired with an IP67 waterproof rear camera designed for exterior mounting — the only solution that makes sense for utes, vans, motorhomes, trailers, and any vehicle where there’s no rear glass to mount a conventional rear camera against. With the upgraded F1.5 aperture on the waterproof rear lens, it’s also the most capable low-light external rear camera VIOFO makes.
4K Front. 4K Waterproof Rear. No Compromises.
The A229 Ultra-W pairs the same 4K front camera as the standard A229 Ultra with a fully IP67-rated waterproof rear that can be mounted on the back of a ute tray, the rear door of a van, the boot lid of a tow vehicle, or the rear of a caravan or motorhome. The result is genuine 4K rear evidence in vehicles where most dash cams simply can’t capture it.
- Front: 4K (3840×2160) with HDR — Sony STARVIS 2 IMX678 (8MP), F1.8 aperture
- Rear (Waterproof): 4K (3840×2160) with HDR — Sony STARVIS 2 IMX678 (8MP), F1.5 super aperture, IP67-rated
F1.5 Super Aperture — Built for Low Light
The A229 Ultra-W’s waterproof rear camera uses an upgraded F1.5 aperture lens — wider than the F1.8 used on most VIOFO rear cameras, including the standard A229 Ultra. The practical difference: significantly more light reaches the sensor in low-light conditions, which matters most in exactly the situations a rear-mounted external camera faces — wet roads at night, low-light reversing, dawn and dusk highway driving, and headlight glare from vehicles behind. Combined with the Sony STARVIS 2 IMX678 sensor, this is the most capable low-light external rear camera in VIOFO’s range.
IP67 Waterproof & Dustproof
The rear camera carries an IP67 rating — fully sealed against dust ingress and rated for immersion in water up to 1 metre. In practical terms, it handles heavy rain, road spray, standard car washing, mud, and dust without issue. The rear cable is similarly sealed at the camera end, with the connection point protected against moisture intrusion.
This isn’t a “weather-resistant” camera that survives the occasional splash — it’s a properly sealed unit designed for permanent exterior mounting in harsh conditions, including NZ winter mud and summer dust on rural and off-road routes.
Sony STARVIS 2 — Both Channels
Both cameras use the Sony STARVIS 2 IMX678 — the same 8MP flagship automotive sensor used in VIOFO’s premium dash cams. Particularly important on the rear waterproof camera, which is exposed to the worst conditions — wet roads at night, headlight glare, and low-contrast scenes where lesser sensors produce unusable footage. With STARVIS 2 on both channels and F1.5 on the rear lens, the low-light performance is genuinely class-leading.
5GHz Wi-Fi & Direct USB-C Transfer
Built-in 5GHz dual-band Wi-Fi lets you preview and download footage to your phone wirelessly via the VIOFO app. For larger 4K transfers, you can also connect your phone directly to the camera with a USB-C cable for fast file transfer — useful when you need to share dash cam footage immediately after an incident.
Quad-Mode GPS
The A229 Ultra-W features an advanced GPS module that connects to GPS, BEIDOU, GALILEO, and GLONASS satellite networks simultaneously, giving you faster lock and better positioning accuracy than single-system GPS. Speed, time, and route data are embedded directly into your recordings — particularly useful for commercial vehicles needing route verification, incident documentation, and trip records.
Three Parking Modes (with HK4 Hardwire Kit)
When paired with the optional HK4 hardwire kit, the A229 Ultra-W supports three parking modes:
- Auto Event Detection (Buffered): saves footage before and after any impact
- Time-Lapse: records continuously at reduced frame rate to conserve storage and battery
- Low Bitrate Continuous: normal recording at reduced bitrate for full coverage
The HK4 connects to your fuse box for constant power and includes low-voltage cutoff to protect your vehicle’s battery from being drained while parked.
Smart Voice Control
Hands-free voice commands let you lock footage, take a photo, start or stop recording, or toggle Wi-Fi without taking your hands off the wheel — useful when you need to react fast in traffic.
Built to Last
The A229 Ultra-W uses a supercapacitor rather than a lithium battery for internal power, delivering stable performance across an extreme operating range (-20°C to +65°C) and significantly longer service life. No battery degradation, no swelling, no replacement cycle. Critical for commercial and exterior-mounted use where the camera regularly experiences hot summer sun and cold winter mornings — and for NZ summers where windscreens regularly hit 60°C+ in direct sun.
How It Compares
Where the A229 Ultra-W 2CH sits in the VIOFO waterproof rear range:
- vs A229 Pro-W 2CH: Same 4K front and same IP67 waterproof rear housing, but the Pro-W’s rear is 2K instead of 4K. Choose Ultra-W if rear plate evidence at distance matters; choose Pro-W to save and get the same external mounting capability with a slightly lower-resolution rear.
- vs A329SW 2CH: A genuine trade-off. The A329SW adds Wi-Fi 6 (4× faster transfers), external SSD storage support, and 4K 60fps on the front (vs Ultra-W’s 30fps), but its waterproof rear is 2K instead of 4K. Choose Ultra-W for 4K rear plate evidence; choose A329SW for the latest connectivity, SSD storage, and smoother front capture.
- vs A229 Ultra 2CH (standard): Same camera unit, same front, same rear sensor. The standard A229 Ultra has a non-waterproof rear designed for interior windscreen mounting (cars, SUVs, sedans). Choose Ultra-W if you don’t have rear glass to mount against; choose the standard Ultra if you do — it’s typically a cleaner install.
Ideal For
- Ute owners: mount the rear camera on the tray or rear of the cab to capture vehicles behind, rear-end damage, or load incidents
- Van and courier operators: rear cargo door mounting captures vehicles behind, theft attempts, and loading-zone incidents
- Motorhome and caravan owners: capture vehicles behind during long trips, plus reversing aid when parking at campsites
- Trailer towers: mount on the back of trailers, boats, or horse floats to capture rear-end incidents while towing
- Tradies and commercial fleets: protection for company vehicles where rear glass mounting isn’t possible
- 4WD and off-road vehicles: rear-mounted camera survives mud, dust, river crossings, and bush bashing
Installation Notes
The waterproof rear camera mounts via adhesive pad to any clean exterior surface, with the cable routed through an existing wiring path or grommet into the cabin. Most installations take 1–2 hours and are well within DIY scope for anyone comfortable working on their vehicle. If you’d prefer professional installation, contact us for installer recommendations in your area.
Cable routing is the trickiest part of the install. The standard 6m cable is sufficient for most utes and vans. Longer 8m, 10m, 15m, and 20m cable options are available for motorhomes, large vans, and trailer applications — get in touch before ordering if you need a longer cable specified.
