This guide covers the Premium (75 kWh), Platinum (100 kWh) and Performance (100 kWh). Every NZ-spec IM6 charges via Type 2 (AC) and accepts up to 11kW three-phase AC. For most New Zealand homes the right choice is a 7.4kW (32A) single-phase smart wall charger — about 10 hours (Premium) or 13 hours (Platinum/Performance) from 10–100%. Homes with three-phase power can supply the car’s full 11kW with a 22kW-capable wall charger. The vehicle supports V2L output of up to 6.6kW — our compatible adapter (rated to 3.5kW) is below.

Single-phase 7.4kW (32A) chargers charge the IM6 overnight — around 9.9 hours for the Premium and 13 hours for the Platinum and Performance, from 10–100%. This is the practical maximum for the majority of NZ homes, which have a single-phase supply.

Buy the tethered version if: you want the simplest everyday option — pull in, plug in, done — and the car parks within reach of the attached cable.
Buy the socket (untethered) version if: you want a tidier wall unit, already own a Type 2 cable, or share the charger between vehicles.

Three-phase chargers — 11kW for the IM6

These are 22kW-capable three-phase wall chargers; the IM6 draws up to its 11kW AC limit, cutting a 10–100% charge to around 6.7 hours (Premium) or 8.8 hours (Platinum/Performance). With the big 100kWh battery, the IM6 is one of the cars that genuinely benefits from three-phase at home.

Buy this if: your property already has three-phase power from the street and you want the fastest home charging the car supports.

Most NZ houses only have single-phase. Check your switchboard for a main breaker with three switches joined as one, or Phase 1/2/3 labels.

About the MG IM6

Three variants, two batteries, one AC setup

The IM6 is a large premium electric SUV from IM Motors, presented and supported in New Zealand through MG Motor.
The Premium uses a 75kWh LFP battery (450km WLTP, RWD). The Platinum and Performance step up to a 100kWh NMC battery on an 800V platform — 555km WLTP for the Platinum RWD and 505km for the Performance AWD.

For home charging all three are the same: every IM6 accepts up to 11kW three-phase AC via Type 2, and 7.4kW on a single-phase supply. Where they differ is DC speed and battery chemistry — covered below.

Estimates use usable capacity and allow for approximately 10% charging losses. Actual speed can vary with temperature, battery condition and the vehicle’s charging behaviour near 100%.

How much MG IM6 range will each charger add?

Kilometres of driving range added per hour of charging, based on each variant’s WLTP consumption. Handy if you mostly top up overnight rather than charging from low — a 7.4kW wall charger adds a typical day’s driving in about an hour.

Portable charger for the MG IM6

The MG IM6 can also be charged with a portable Type 2 EV charger (sometimes called a granny charger). A 10A charger plugs into a standard New Zealand household socket and adds roughly 11–13km of range per hour — useful overnight, when travelling, or as a backup. A 16A model uses a correctly installed blue caravan-style socket and adds around 17–20km per hour.

Buy the 10A if: you need a travel charger, emergency backup or occasional overnight top-ups from a standard socket.
Buy the 16A if: you have (or will install) a dedicated caravan-style socket and want a faster portable option for regular charging.

For everyday charging — especially with the Platinum and Performance’s 100kWh battery, which takes over 40 hours from a standard socket — a 7.4kW wall charger is far more practical. But a portable unit needs no permanently mounted equipment and travels with the car. Any portable charger for the IM6 must have a Type 2 vehicle connector.

What charging cable does the MG IM6 need?

Vehicle-side plug: Type 2. You’ll need your own Type 2 to Type 2 cable for public AC chargers and for any untethered (socket-only) wall charger. We recommend 5m.

Choose the three-phase 22kW-rated cable. A single-phase 7kW cable will physically fit the IM6, but it won’t carry the full 11kW three-phase rate — on a three-phase AC charger the cheaper cable becomes the bottleneck. The 22kW cable covers every AC scenario the car supports.

Public DC fast chargers have their cables attached, so no cable is needed there. Most free public AC chargers use a Type 2 socket and require your own cable; some have a cable hard-wired, so it isn’t needed 100% of the time.

The MG IM6 supports Vehicle-to-Load with one of the highest outputs on the market — up to 6.6kW . The compatible adapter we currently stock is rated to a maximum of 3.5kW through its New Zealand socket, which is still sufficient for most portable appliances, including fridges, kettles, heaters, lights and many power tools. 

Note: V2L powers appliances plugged into the adapter — it is not a connection to your house’s fixed wiring, and it can’t backfeed your switchboard. Check appliance loads before use, and make sure the adapter you buy is compatible with your vehicle.

Public charging with the MG IM6

DC fast charging (CCS2): this is where the IM6 shines. The Platinum and Performance use an 800V platform accepting up to 396kW — among the very fastest-charging cars in New Zealand — taking the battery from 30% to 80% in around 15 minutes on a sufficiently powerful charger. The Premium accepts up to 153kW, with 30–80% in around 20 minutes. DC chargers have cables attached, so you don’t need to bring your own. Charging slows after 80%, so on longer trips it’s usually quicker to split charging into shorter stops. Note that few NZ chargers currently deliver anywhere near 396kW — the car will simply take the maximum the charger can supply.

What type of charger does the MG IM6 use?

The IM6 uses a Type 2 inlet for AC charging and CCS2 for DC fast charging. Compatible home charging options need a Type 2 vehicle connector, while untethered and public AC chargers require a Type 2-to-Type 2 cable.

The MG IM6 has a maximum AC charging rate of 11kW across all variants. It can be connected to a 22kW three-phase wall charger, but the vehicle will draw a maximum of approximately 11kW. A 22kW-rated charger is still the normal product used to provide 11kW three-phase charging.

No. A single-phase 7.4kW charger charges the IM6 overnight and suits the majority of NZ homes, which only have a single-phase supply. That said, with the Platinum and Performance’s 100kWh battery, the IM6 benefits from three-phase more than most EVs — if your property already has it, 11kW cuts a full charge from ~13 hours to ~8.8 hours.

Yes — a 10A portable Type 2 charger plugs into a standard household socket, adding roughly 11–13km of range per hour. A full charge takes around 32 hours (Premium) or 42 hours (Platinum/Performance), so it’s best for travel, occasional top-ups or as a backup rather than daily charging.

A three-phase Type 2 to Type 2 cable rated to 22kW, in 5m. This carries the IM6’s full 11kW AC rate; a single-phase 7kW cable may fit but would limit charging on an 11kW three-phase AC charger.

It depends on your variant. The Premium uses an LFP battery, which is generally happy being charged to 100% regularly. The Platinum and Performance use an NMC battery, where an 80–90% daily limit is commonly recommended, with 100% reserved for longer trips. Always follow the charging guidance in your vehicle manual.

The Platinum and Performance accept up to 396kW via CCS2 on their 800V platform — 30–80% in around 15 minutes, making the IM6 one of the fastest-charging cars sold in NZ. The Premium accepts up to 153kW, with 30–80% in around 20 minutes. Charging slows after 80%.

The MG IM6 vehicle can support V2L output of up to 6.6kW. However, the compatible NZ V2L adapter we currently sell is rated to a maximum output of 3.5kW. This is enough for appliances such as a fridge, lights, kettle or many portable tools, provided the combined load stays below the adapter rating. We sell the compatible adapter here.

Not directly. V2L powers appliances plugged into the adapter’s socket — it is not a connection to your home’s fixed wiring and cannot backfeed your switchboard. With 6.6kW available you can run essentials like a fridge, lights, kettle or heater from the adapter, but whole-house backup requires separate, professionally installed equipment. Please note the cable we stock can do a maximum of 3.5kW
