About the PV5

Charging Kia’s electric van at home and at work

The Kia PV5 Cargo runs a 71.2kWh NCM battery for up to 416km of WLTP range, on Kia’s purpose-built PBV platform. It’s aimed squarely at couriers, trades and fleets — which means most PV5s will do the bulk of their charging on AC overnight, at home or at the depot.

The important detail when choosing a charger: the PV5 comes with an 11kW onboard AC charger as standard, with a 22kW upgrade available as a factory option. Both need a 3-phase supply to reach their full speed — on single-phase you’ll charge at 7kW either way. Work out which one you ordered before you buy a charger, because it changes what’s worth installing.

Public charging with the Kia PV5 (NZ)

DC fast charging (CCS2)

The PV5 supports up to 150kW DC charging — among the best in the electric van segment — taking the battery from 10% to 80% in around 30 minutes. Handy for a mid-shift top-up, though for fleet running costs AC charging at base is far cheaper. Charging slows after 80%, so on longer trips you’re better to split charging up. DC chargers have cables attached, so there’s no need to bring your own.

Public AC charging (Type 2)

Type 2 public chargers are found at supermarkets, malls, hotels and public carparks — you’ll need to bring your own cable for most of these. The charge port is on the front-centre of the vehicle.

What cable do I need for public AC charging?

We recommend a 22kW (3-phase) Type 2 to Type 2 cable in 5m. It covers both the standard 11kW and optional 22kW onboard chargers, and still works on every single-phase charger. The majority of free public chargers use a Type 2 socket, so this cable lets you use them. Some public chargers have a Type 2 cable hard-wired, so a cable isn’t needed 100% of the time.

The PV5 includes 3.6kW vehicle-to-load capability with an interior 3-pin household plug — run power tools, site lighting, a fridge or camping gear straight from the van’s battery. It’s a genuine selling point for trades and mobile service operators.

What is the best home or work charger for the Kia PV5?

For most homes on single-phase power, a 7kW (32A) wall charger is the best option — it fully charges the PV5 overnight in around 9 hours 40 minutes. If you have 3-phase power at home or at your depot, a 22kW charger like the Tron charges in about 6.5 hours on the standard 11kW onboard charger, or around 3 hours 15 minutes if you optioned the 22kW upgrade.

Only if you have three-phase power where the van parks. The 22kW upgrade lets the PV5 charge at 22kW instead of 11kW, cutting a 10–100% charge from about 6.5 hours to roughly 3 hours 15 minutes — but you also need a 22kW three-phase wall charger to use it. On a single-phase supply you’ll charge at 7kW either way, so the upgrade makes no difference. Worth checking your supply before you order.
