KIA EV3 Chargers & Charging guide

Kiw EV3 charging

The EV3 comes with two different battery options, 58.3 kWh for the light SR or the larger 81.4 kWh battery for the Light LR, Earth LR & GT-Line LR.
Using the 8a plugin charger the Light SR will take 31 hours to charge from 10% to 100% and the LR models will take 44 Hours. For this reason, we recommend investing in one of our wall mounted ev chargers to safely fully charge overnight.

Below we will cover charge times, how to public charge and home chargers for the EV3.

Public charging with the EV3

There two types of public chargers; DC CCS fast charger and AC chargers.

The DC CCS charger.
This is a DC fast charger; these chargers have the cables attached so there is no need to bring your own.
To use these public stations download the following apps or for more head to our full public charging guide for more information.

The EV3 supports up to 150kW DC charging, this will charge 10% to 80% in around 31min. Charging after 80% does slow down, so for you are better to split the charging up for longer trips.

Type 2 Public AC chargers like the ones you find a super markets, malls, hotels & Motels. You will need to bring your own cable for these. Plug share will show the chargers in your area and you can see what sort of cables are needed.

What sort of cable do I need for Public charging?

We recommend a 22kW Type 2 to Type 2 cable. 5m will cover most situations.
The maximum supported charge speed using ac is 11kW so the 22kW cable will ensure you get the maximum speed when ac charging.
The majority of free public chargers use the Type 2 Socket, so this cable will allow you to use the chargers. Note Some public charges have a Type 2 hard wired so a cable is not needed 100% of the time.

Home chargers for the KIA EV3

There are a couple of options and things to consider when selecting the home charge for the EV3. If you have 3 phase at home then you can consider using a 3 phase 22kW charger, this will charge a bit faster than the 7kw. Most homes only have single phase so we generally recommend a 7kW charger.

22kW Chargers

Before considering a 22kW wall charger your house will need to already be pre-wired for 3 phase from the street. The majority of houses in NZ only have a single phase feed.

You can check at the switch board and look for the main circuit breaker to see if the main breaker has 3 switches joined as one. Or if there is Phase 1, Phase 2, Phase 3 labelled.

7.4kW Chargers

Our 7.4 kw home chargers will suit most peoples needs, they will fully charge the car overnight. Select from a charger with a Cable already attached.
Or if you are planning on buying a 3 phase cable then you can consider the untethered version.

Load Monitoring
Both the chargers have load monitoring to prevent overloading of the mains when you are charging. This monitors the total load and can automatically reduce the load if you approach the maximum of the house.

Solar
Both chargers also support solar diversion so will vary the charging power based on how much solar you are generating so you can
