Best for most NZ homes
Most NZ homes have a single-phase supply, and on single-phase the EV3 charges at up to about 7.4kW. That’s a full Standard Range in around 8.8 hours and a Long Range in around 12.3 hours — and since most nights start well above 0%, a typical top-up is done long before morning.
Scheduling through the free app lines charging up with off-peak rates. Solar diversion lets you divert excess solar generation into the vehicle and reduce daytime charging costs. Load monitoring keeps total household draw inside your mains capacity.

If your property already has a three-phase supply, a 22kW-capable three-phase wall charger lets the EV3 charge at its full onboard rate. The vehicle will draw a maximum of approximately 11kW, so a Standard Range fills in about 5.9 hours and a Long Range in about 8.2 hours.
Compatible with Type 2 AC chargers suitable for your supply and correctly installed by a qualified electrician. Eligible models meet the applicable New Zealand electrical requirements and are supplied with an SDoC.

Not sure what you have? Many three-phase homes have a main switch with three switches joined together, or circuits labelled Phase 1, 2 and 3 — but the reliable answer comes from your electrician or power retailer. Upgrading a single-phase house to three-phase is rarely worth it for the EV3 alone; a 7.4kW charger already covers a normal day’s driving in a few hours.

The charger supplied with the car runs at 8A, which takes well over a day to fill an EV3 from empty. A 10A portable Type 2 charger is a useful step up for travel and the bach, and a 16A model on a correctly installed blue caravan-style socket adds around 25km of range per hour.
Any portable charger for the EV3 must have a Type 2 vehicle connector, be suitable for your supply and be used on a socket correctly installed by a qualified electrician. For daily home charging, a wall charger is faster and smarter.

Vehicle-side plug: Type 2. You’ll need your own Type 2 to Type 2 cable for public AC chargers and for any untethered (socket-only) wall charger. We recommend 5m.
Choose a 22kW three-phase cable. The EV3 charges at up to 11kW on three-phase public AC chargers, and a single-phase 7kW cable would limit it to about 7kW.
Most free public AC chargers use a Type 2 socket and need your own cable; some have one hard-wired.

The EV3 supports Vehicle-to-Load at up to 3.6kW, through an interior socket and an external adapter that plugs into the charge port — enough for a fridge, lights, kettle, projector or many portable tools. Kia NZ supply an adapter with the car; ours is a handy second adapter or replacement, with a NZ 15A socket that also accepts standard 10A plugs.
V2L powers appliances plugged into the adapter — it is not a connection to your home’s fixed wiring and cannot backfeed your switchboard.

About the Kia EV3
The EV3 is Kia’s compact electric SUV and the 2025 World Car of the Year. NZ grades are Light Standard Range with a 58.3kWh battery, and Light Long Range, Earth and GT-Line with an 81.4kWh battery. A dual-motor EV3 GT has also been confirmed for NZ, using the 81.4kWh battery.
Every grade charges the same way at home: Type 2 AC at up to 11kW with three-phase charging. On DC, the Standard Range charges at up to about 100kW and the Long Range at up to 128kW.

DC fast charging (CCS2): the cable is attached at ChargeNet, BP Pulse, Z and most Tesla Superchargers, so there’s nothing to bring. A Standard Range charges 10–80% in around 29 minutes and a Long Range in around 31 minutes on a suitably fast charger. Charging slows past 80%, so on long trips several short stops beat one long one.

The EV3 has a CCS2 inlet: the upper Type 2 section is used for AC charging and the full CCS2 connector for DC fast charging. Untethered and public AC chargers require a Type 2-to-Type 2 cable.
