Hyundai IONIQ 6 Charging Guide

Ioniq 6 Charging at home

The IONIQ 6 has a 10.5kW onboard charger, this allows you to charge at home or in public using single or 3 phase chargers, we will get in to what that means further down.

From factory the IONIQ comes with a Type 2 10A charger that will charge at around 8 amps from a standard home plug.
This will take 35 hours to charge the 53kWh model and 47 hours to charge the 77.4kWh model from 0 to 100%.

We recommend investing in a wall mounted charger to safely charge the car fully overnight. These have many advantages such being able to schedule charging during offpeak rates, dynamic load balancing and solar diversion.

IONIQ 6 Charge times

Estimate charge timing comparison from 20% to 100%. After 95% charging can slow depending on the temperature of the batteries, also as the battery gets full the car balances the cells so charging will slow as it approaches 100%

Public charging the IONIQ 6

There are two types of public chargers. DC chargers where you don’t have to bring your own cable and AC chargers where often you will need to bring a cable.

CCS DC fast charges

The fast chargers will charge your car from 20% to 80% in 18min using a 350kW station. For a 50kW charger you are looking at around 58min for the standard range and 73 min for the long range. There is no need to bring a cable as the fast charging stations have these hard wired. The most common apps needed are below, there are other smaller operators out there.

Public AC Chargers

These are the chargers you will find at places like super markets, malls, gyms, hotels and public carparks. They are not fast chargers and you can expect similar charge times to the home chargers. Most of these chargers you need to bring your own Type 2 to Type 2 cable

Orion Type 2 EV charger

The IONIQ 6 has an onboard 3 phase charger so to make use of this we recommend getting the 3 Phase T2-T2 charge cable. These are backwards compatible with all single phase chargers and will allow you to charge at 10.5kW.

Selecting a Home Charger

If you are being budget concious and don’t do allot of km, then the 16A caravan type charger is the cheapest option to charge faster. However keep in mind the cost to install these is similar to installing a wall charger and you won’t get all the features of a wall charger.

22kW Chargers

Before considering a 22kW wall charger your house will need to already be pre-wired for 3 phase from the street. The majority of houses in NZ only have a single phase feed.

You can check at the switch board and look for the main circuit breaker to see if the main breaker has 3 switches joined as one.

7.4kW Chargers

Our 7.4 kw home chargers will suit most peoples needs, they will fully charge the car overnight. Select from a charger with a Cable already attached.
Or if you are planning on buying a 3 phase cable then you can consider the untethered version.

Load Monitoring
Both the chargers have load monitoring to prevent overloading of the mains when you are charging. This monitors the total load and can automatically reduce the load if you approach the maximum of the house.

Solar
Both chargers also support solar diversion so will vary the charging power based on how much solar you are generating so you can

Vehicle to Load adapter

The Ioniq 6 supports Vehicle to load. A vehicle to load adapter turns your car in to a portable power source even when turned off.

This is great for power cuts, or using any electrical equipment when camping or where you need power.

Simply plug in the adapter to your Charge port, enable V2L and plugin a 240v appliance.
