7.4kW smart wall chargers

Single-phase 7.4kW (32A) chargers charge the Aion V overnight — around 10 hours from 10–100%. This is the practical maximum for the majority of NZ homes, which have a single-phase supply.

Load monitoring prevents overloading your mains while charging. Solar diversion varies charging power to match your solar generation. Scheduling via the free app makes the most of off-peak rates. Eligible models meet the applicable New Zealand electrical requirements and are supplied with an SDoC.

Three-phase chargers — 11kW for the Aion V

These are 22kW-capable three-phase wall chargers; the Aion V draws up to its 11kW AC limit, cutting a 10–100% charge to around 7 hours.

Your house needs to be pre-wired for three-phase from the street — most NZ houses only have single-phase. Check the switchboard for a main breaker with three switches joined as one, or Phase 1/2/3 labels.

7.4kW or 11kW home charging for the Aion V?

The Aion V accepts a maximum of 11kW on AC. A single-phase 7.4kW charger delivers 7.4kW; a 22kW-capable three-phase charger delivers the car’s full 11kW — the charger is rated to 22kW, but the vehicle will only draw 11kW. Three-phase is only an option if your property already has a three-phase supply.

Portable chargers for the GAC Aion V

The GAC Aion V can also be charged using a portable Type 2 EV charger. A 10A charger plugs into a standard New Zealand household socket and is useful for overnight charging, travel or as a backup charger. For faster portable charging, a 16A model can be used with a correctly installed blue caravan-style socket.

Portable chargers are slower than a 7.4kW wall charger, but they require no permanently mounted charging unit and can be taken with the vehicle. A portable charger for the Aion V must have a Type 2 vehicle connector and a mains plug suitable for the available socket.

Which should you choose? A 10A unit suits emergencies, travel and occasional top-ups. A 16A unit can be a practical regular-charging option if you have a suitable dedicated caravan-style socket. For everyday charging of a 75kWh battery, a wall charger is far more practical.

Charging cable for the GAC Aion V

You’ll need your own Type 2 cable for public AC chargers and for any untethered (socket-only) wall charger. We recommend a three-phase Type 2 to Type 2 cable rated to 22kW, in 5m.

A single-phase 7kW Type 2 cable will physically fit the Aion V, but it won’t carry the full 11kW three-phase rate — so if you ever use a three-phase AC charger, the cheaper cable becomes the bottleneck. The 22kW-rated cable covers every AC scenario the car supports.

Most free public chargers use a Type 2 socket and require your own cable; some have a cable hard-wired, so it isn’t needed 100% of the time.

About the GAC Aion V

Charging specifications

The GAC Aion V is a mid-size electric SUV with a 75.26kWh LFP battery giving 510km of WLTP range. It charges on Type 2 (AC) and CCS2 (DC), accepting up to 11kW AC and up to 180kW DC. Charging is the same on both the Aion V and Aion V LUX.

Its LFP battery is generally more tolerant of regular 100% charging than many nickel-based EV batteries — follow the charging guidance in your vehicle manual.

Public charging

The Aion V supports up to 180kW DC charging via CCS2 — among the quickest in its class — taking the car from 30% to 80% in around 16 minutes. DC chargers have cables attached, so you don’t need to bring your own. Charging slows after 80%, so on longer trips it’s usually quicker to split charging into shorter stops.

What type of charger does the GAC Aion V use?

The Aion V uses a Type 2 inlet for AC charging and CCS2 for DC fast charging. Compatible home charging options need a Type 2 vehicle connector, while untethered and public AC chargers require a Type 2-to-Type 2 cable.

Some new Aion V purchases may include a 7kW wall charger — check the current offer and the charger’s included features with your GAC dealer, as installation is generally arranged separately. A 7kW unit is sufficient for many owners. People typically buy an additional or alternative charger for solar-surplus charging, dynamic load balancing, a tethered cable, three-phase 11kW charging, app scheduling, or a second charging location.
