Forthing Taikon ev home charging
Looking for the right Forthing Taikon EV home wall charger in New Zealand? This guide covers everything: which EV wall charger to install at home, how fast the Taikon EV charges, and what cable you need for public AC chargers.

The Forthing Taikon EV is a modern electric SUV launched in New Zealand by Forthing NZ. It uses a 64.4kWh LFP battery with an 11kW onboard AC charger, which means it can take advantage of 3-phase home charging if you have 3 phase at home. DC fast charging is solid for a mid-size electric SUV, with a quoted 30–80% in approximately 30 minutes on a 120kW+ rapid charger. It delivers up to 400km WLTP range, a 150kW peak permanent-magnet motor with 240Nm of torque, and includes a 7-year / 200,000km factory warranty.

Best Home Wall Chargers for the Forthing Taikon EV

Fast, reliable overnight charging — single-phase or 3-phase, we’ll match the right one to your home

The Taikon EV has an 11kW onboard charger, which is unusual for a vehicle in this price bracket — most EVs in NZ are limited to 6.6kW or 7.4kW AC. To unlock the Taikon’s full home charging speed you need a 3-phase wall charger. If your home is single-phase (most NZ homes), a standard 7kW / 32A wall charger is still an excellent match — it’ll deliver around 7.4kW, which is the most a single-phase supply can give.

Choose your home charging style:
• 3-phase 11kW wall charger: best match for the Taikon EV — full home charging speed, a full charge in roughly 7 hours
• Single-phase 7kW (32A) wall charger: ideal if your home is single-phase — a full charge in roughly 9 hours overnight
• Tethered (fixed cable): the easiest daily experience — plug in and go
• Untethered (socket only): use your own Type 2 cable — great if you share a charger between vehicles or want one cable for home and public AC charging

Public charging with the Forthing Taikon EV (NZ)

In New Zealand you’ll mainly use two public charging types:
DC fast chargers for road trips and top-ups, and Type 2 AC chargers commonly found at supermarkets, malls, hotels and public car parks.

DC fast charging
The Taikon EV supports DC fast charging at over 120kW, with a quoted 30–80% session in approximately 30 minutes on a compatible rapid charger (conditions apply).
For longer trips, multiple shorter sessions stopping at around 20–80% give you the best balance of speed and range.

Type 2 AC chargers
Many AC public chargers are “bring-your-own-cable” — and because the Taikon EV has an 11kW onboard charger, it can take full advantage of 11kW and 22kW public AC chargers (capped at the vehicle’s 11kW). PlugShare is handy for checking what’s available at your destination before you leave.

What cable do I need for public AC charging?

We recommend a Type 2 to Type 2  22kW cable.
Because the Taikon EV can pull up to 11kW AC, a three-phase 22kW-rated cable is the best choice if you’ll use public 22kW chargers — it’ll let the car charge at its full 11kW. A standard 7kW single-phase cable also works fine for the more common 7kW public AC bays.
A 5m length suits most public AC bays and parking layouts.

Forthing Taikon EV home charging FAQs (NZ)

What is the best home wall charger for the Forthing Taikon EV?

The Taikon EV has an 11kW onboard AC charger, so the best home wall charger depends on whether your home is single-phase or three-phase:
• 3-phase home: an 11kW (16A 3-phase) wall charger unlocks the Taikon’s full home charging speed — a full charge in around 6 hours.
• Single-phase home (most NZ homes): a 7kW (32A) wall charger is the right choice — it’ll deliver around 7.4kW, the maximum a single-phase supply can provide, with a full overnight charge in around 9 hours.

No, but it helps. The Taikon EV will charge happily on a standard single-phase 32A (7kW) wall charger — that’s how most NZ homes will set it up. If you do have three-phase available, an 11kW 3-phase wallbox will give you the Taikon’s full AC charging speed and cut a full charge to around 6 hours.

Single-phase power in NZ tops out at around 7.4kW (32A Ă— 230V). Even though the Taikon EV’s onboard charger is rated for 11kW, the wall can only supply 7.4kW on a single-phase circuit. To reach the full 11kW you need three-phase power and a 3-phase wallbox. The good news: 7.4kW is plenty for overnight home charging — a typical top-up takes around 9 hours from low SOC.

Yes — but expect long charge times. At 8A, the Taikon EV’s 64.4kWh battery takes around 35 hours to charge from 10% to full. The included ICCB (in-cable charger) is fine as a backup or occasional use, but a dedicated wallbox makes overnight home charging far more practical.

A Type 2 to Type 2 cable is the right choice for NZ AC destination charging. To get the most out of the Taikon EV at 11kW or 22kW public AC bays, choose a three-phase 22kW-rated cable. A 5m length suits the vast majority of public AC bays.

On a compatible DC rapid charger (120kW or higher), the Taikon EV charges from 30–80% in approximately 30 minutes at typical conditions (25°C ambient, conditions apply). That makes it well-suited to occasional road trips alongside daily home AC charging.

The Taikon EV’s charging port is located on the front centre of the vehicle, below the front badge panel. This makes it easy to drive nose-in to most public chargers and home wallbox installations.
