A single-phase 7.4kW (32A) charger delivers everything the S5 can take on AC, with headroom to spare: around 7.4 hours for the 49kWh battery, or 9.5 hours for the 62kWh.
Load monitoring prevents overloading your mains while charging. Solar diversion varies charging power to match your generation, so you can divert excess solar into the car and reduce daytime charging costs. Scheduling via the free app makes the most of off-peak and free-hour rates — on a battery this size, the tariff you charge on is most of your running cost.
Charge times from 10% to 100%. The last few percent slow down as the cells balance, so these are estimates.

Vehicle-side plug: Type 2. You’ll need your own Type 2 to Type 2 cable for public AC chargers, and for any untethered (socket-only) wall charger. We recommend 5m.
A single-phase 7kW cable is all the S5 needs. A 22kW three-phase cable also works, and is worth considering only if you may later own a car that charges faster.
Most free public AC chargers use a Type 2 socket and need your own cable; some have one hard-wired. DC fast chargers always have their cables attached.

The S5 EV supports Vehicle-to-Load through an adapter that plugs into the charge port and gives you a standard New Zealand socket — enough for a fridge, lights, kettle, projector, camping gear or many portable tools.
With a 49 or 62kWh battery on board, the S5 makes a genuinely useful power source at a campsite, on a worksite, or during an outage. V2L powers appliances plugged into the adapter — it is not a connection to your home’s fixed wiring and cannot backfeed your switchboard. We sell these here.
About the MG S5 EV
The S5 EV is MG’s replacement for the ZS EV, and a very different car underneath — a dedicated electric platform shared with the MG4, rear-wheel drive, and a slim battery pack that frees up cabin space. New Zealand gets Excite and Essence trims, each available with either battery.
The 49kWh pack is good for up to 340km (WLTP) and DC charging to around 120kW. The 62kWh extends that to about 425km and roughly 140kW on DC. Both charge at the same rate on AC, so the larger battery simply takes a couple of hours longer at home.

DC fast charging (CCS2): the S5 takes up to 120kW on the 49kWh battery and around 140kW on the 62kWh, which puts a 10–80% stop at roughly 24 to 28 minutes. Charging slows sharply above 80%, so on a road trip a short stop to 80% and back on the road beats waiting for a full battery. DC chargers have cables attached. Public AC charging (Type 2): at supermarkets, malls, hotels and motels you’ll usually need your own Type 2 cable. Check PlugShare for chargers in your area and what cables they need.

Up to 6.6kW, on both battery sizes. That works out at roughly 41km of range per hour of charging, so a typical overnight session more than covers a day’s driving.
No. The onboard charger is limited to 6.6kW, so an 11kW or 22kW three-phase charger puts exactly the same power into the car as a 7.4kW single-phase unit — at a higher price, and often a higher installation cost. Three-phase is only worth it if you also charge a vehicle that can use it.
A 7kW Type 2 to Type 2 cable in 5m. That carries everything the car can take on AC, and it’s also the cable you need between the car and a socket-only wall charger.
The 49kWh pack uses LFP chemistry, which is generally more tolerant of regular 100% charging than many nickel-based EV batteries. Follow the charging guidance in your vehicle manual for your specific battery.
