Geely EX2 Home Chargers, Cable, V2L & Charging Guide NZ

The Geely EX2 is a compact fully electric hatchback arriving in New Zealand. For home charging, a 7.4kW single-phase wall charger is the right match: the EX2’s onboard charger accepts up to approximately 6.6kW AC, so a 32A wall charger gives the car all the AC power it can use while adding app scheduling, load monitoring and optional solar charging.

Below you can compare Geely EX2 home chargers, estimated charging times, Type 2 cables, portable chargers, public CCS2 fast charging and V2L options for New Zealand.

Best match for the EX2

7.4kW smart wall chargers

A single-phase 7.4kW (32A) wall charger is the best match for the EX2 because the car itself is limited to around 6.6kW AC. That means a larger 22kW three-phase wall charger will not charge this car any faster. Based on the Australian Complete and Inspire specifications, a 10–100% charge is approximately 5.4 hours for the 35.35kWh battery and 7.1 hours for the 47.14kWh battery.

Buy the tethered version if: you want the simplest everyday option — pull in, plug in, done.
Buy the socket (untethered) version if: you want a tidier wall unit, already own a Type 2 cable, or share the charger between vehicles.

Load monitoring automatically reduces charging current when the rest of the house is using more power, helping avoid overloading the main supply. Solar diversion can vary the charging current to use excess solar generation, while app scheduling lets you make the most of overnight or off-peak electricity rates.

About the Geely EX2

Compact EV, practical home charging

The Geely EX2 is a compact five-seat battery electric vehicle built on Geely’s GEA electric platform. Geely New Zealand has announced the EX2 as coming soon, but has not yet published the complete local specification sheet.

The current Australian EX2 range provides the closest reference, with Complete and Inspire variants using approximately 35.35kWh and 47.14kWh batteries. Both use a Type 2 AC / CCS2 DC charge port and a single-phase onboard charger rated at approximately 6.6kW AC.

The EX2 also supports Vehicle-to-Load (V2L), allowing the traction battery to power normal 230V appliances through a compatible V2L adapter.

Portable charger for the Geely EX2

A portable Type 2 charger is useful as a backup or travel charger for the EX2. On a 10A household supply, a 10–100% charge is roughly 15.4 hours for the 35.35kWh battery or 20.5 hours for the 47.14kWh battery. A 16A model used with a correctly installed blue caravan-style socket reduces this to roughly 9.6 and 12.8 hours respectively.

Buy the 10A if: you want a travel charger for the bach and family visits, or a faster replacement for the unit supplied with the car.
Buy the 16A if: you have (or will install) a dedicated caravan-style socket and want the fastest portable option.

Any portable charger for the EX2 must have a Type 2 vehicle connector.

What charging cable does the EX2 need?

Vehicle-side plug: Type 2. You’ll need your own Type 2 to Type 2 cable for public AC chargers and for any untethered (socket-only) wall charger. We recommend 5m for normal everyday use.

Because the EX2 is limited to around 6.6kW AC on a single phase, a 7kW / 32A single-phase Type 2 cable is sufficient. A 22kW three-phase Type 2 cable also works and may be worth buying if you want one cable that can be reused with a future EV that supports faster three-phase AC charging.

Most free public AC chargers use a Type 2 socket and need your own cable; some have one hard-wired. DC fast chargers always have their cables attached.

Geely EX2 V2L adapter

The Geely EX2 supports Vehicle-to-Load (V2L), allowing the high-voltage traction battery to supply normal 230V appliances through an adapter plugged into the vehicle’s Type 2 charge port. Current Australian specifications list approximately 3kW V2L output.

Our Geely V2L adapter is compatible with the EX2, EX5 and Starray EM-i and provides a New Zealand socket for appliances, camping equipment, chargers and many portable tools. It is a convenient way to use the car as a mobile power source during camping, work or a power outage.

V2L is for appliances connected directly to the adapter. It is not intended to backfeed your home’s fixed wiring or switchboard.

Public charging with the Geely EX2

DC fast charging (CCS2): the current Australian EX2 Complete is rated up to approximately 60kW DC, while the larger-battery Inspire is rated up to approximately 80kW DC. Geely’s global EX2 information states a 30–80% fast charge can take around 25 minutes. DC fast chargers have their own cable attached. The main NZ networks are covered in our public charging guide.

Public AC charging (Type 2): at supermarkets, malls, hotels and motels you’ll usually need your own Type 2 cable. Check PlugShare for chargers in your area and what cables they need.

Geely EX2 charging FAQs

What type of charger does the Geely EX2 use?

The Geely EX2 uses a Type 2 connection for AC charging and CCS2 for DC fast charging. Socket-only home chargers and many public AC chargers require a Type 2 to Type 2 cable.

A 7.4kW (32A) single-phase smart wall charger. The EX2’s onboard AC charger is limited to approximately 6.6kW, so a 7.4kW wall unit supplies all the AC power the vehicle can use while giving you headroom for normal supply variation.

No. The EX2 is a single-phase AC charging vehicle and is limited to approximately 6.6kW AC. A 22kW three-phase charger can still charge the car, but the EX2 will only take power from one phase up to its onboard-charger limit.

Using the current Australian battery specifications as a guide, approximately 5.4 hours from 10–100% for the 35.35kWh Complete and around 7.1 hours for the 47.14kWh Inspire on a wall charger delivering the vehicle’s full 6.6kW AC rate.

Yes. A 10A portable Type 2 charger can charge the EX2 from a suitable standard household socket. Expect roughly 15.4 hours from 10–100% for the 35.35kWh battery or 20.5 hours for the 47.14kWh battery.

A Type 2 to Type 2 charging cable. A 32A single-phase cable is enough for the EX2’s maximum AC charging rate. A 22kW three-phase cable will also work and can be useful if you want to reuse it with another EV later.

The current Australian specifications list up to approximately 60kW DC for the Complete and 80kW DC for the Inspire. Both use a CCS2 connector. Final New Zealand specifications should be confirmed when Geely NZ publishes them.

Yes. The EX2 supports Vehicle-to-Load through an adapter connected to its charge port, with current Australian specifications listing approximately 3kW output. Our Geely V2L adapter is compatible with the EX2, EX5 and Starray EM-i.

Yes. Appliances can be plugged directly into the V2L adapter within the vehicle’s available output. It can be useful for fridges, lights, battery chargers and other suitable loads. Do not connect V2L directly into fixed house wiring or a switchboard unless a compliant purpose-designed electrical system has been installed.

It depends on the distance from your switchboard to the parking location, the cable route and the available capacity of your electrical supply. We can arrange installation quotes through our installer network in many locations nationwide, or you can buy the charger only and use your own electrician. Request a quote here.
