A single-phase 7.4kW (32A) charger covers the car’s full 7kW AC rate: about 2.7 hours for the Dynamic FWD, or 5.1 hours for the AWD models’ larger battery. Giving you a full charge overnight.

About the BYD Sealion 8

Three variants, two batteries

The Sealion 8 is BYD’s large seven-seat plug-in hybrid, built on the DM 5.0 powertrain with an LFP Blade Battery. The Dynamic FWD uses a 19kWh pack for up to 103km of electric range; the Dynamic AWD and Premium AWD step up to 35.6kWh and 152km, with 359kW and a 4.9-second 0–100km/h.

All three charge the same way on AC: Type 2 at 7kW maximum. What changes is how long a full charge takes and how fast each accepts DC on the road. Range figures are NEDC — expect roughly 80km (FWD) and 120km (AWD) in real-world NZ driving.

How much electric range will each charger add?

Kilometres of electric driving added per hour of charging, based on NEDC range — expect real-world figures around 20–25% lower. On a plug-in hybrid this is the number that matters most: every kilometre you add is a kilometre you don’t buy petrol for.

Portable charger for the BYD Sealion 8

A portable Type 2 charger plugged into a standard household socket fills the Dynamic FWD in around 8.3 hours on 10A — a single overnight charge. The AWD models’ 35.6kWh battery takes about 15.5 hours, so a wall charger is the practical choice there. A 16A model on a correctly installed blue caravan-style socket roughly halves both.

Buy the 10A if: you want a travel charger for the bach and family visits, or a faster replacement for the unit supplied with the car.
Buy the 16A if: you have (or will install) a dedicated caravan-style socket and want the fastest portable option.

Any portable charger for the Sealion 8 must have a Type 2 vehicle connector.

What charging cable does the Sealion 8 need?

Vehicle-side plug: Type 2. You’ll need your own Type 2 to Type 2 cable for public AC chargers, and for any untethered (socket-only) wall charger — including the basic charger BYD supply with the car if yours has a socket rather than a fixed cable. We recommend 5m.

Because the car caps at 7kW, a single-phase 7kW cable is sufficient. A 22kW three-phase cable also works and is worth considering only if you may later own a car that charges faster.

Most free public AC chargers use a Type 2 socket and need your own cable; some have one hard-wired. DC fast chargers always have their cables attached.

The Sealion 8 supports Vehicle-to-Load through an adapter that plugs into the charge port and gives you a standard New Zealand socket — enough for a fridge, lights, kettle, projector or many portable tools. BYD supply an adapter with the car; we stock spares if you want a second one, or a replacement.

Because the petrol engine can recharge the battery, a plug-in hybrid makes a particularly practical power source on a worksite, at a campsite or in an outage. V2L powers appliances plugged into the adapter — it is not a connection to your home’s fixed wiring and cannot backfeed your switchboard.

Public charging with the BYD Sealion 8

DC fast charging (CCS2): useful and unusual on a plug-in hybrid. The Dynamic FWD accepts up to 40kW and the AWD models up to 74kW. Charging slows sharply above 80%, so on a road trip a short stop to 80% and back on the road beats waiting for a full battery. DC chargers have cables attached. What type of charger does the BYD Sealion 8 use?

A Type 2 inlet for AC charging and CCS2 for DC fast charging, across all three variants. Untethered and public AC chargers require a Type 2-to-Type 2 cable.

A 7.4kW (32A) single-phase smart wall charger. It covers the car’s full 7kW AC rate, charging the Dynamic FWD in about 2.7 hours and the AWD models in about 5.1 hours from 10–100%.

No, and there is no benefit in buying one for this car. The onboard charger is limited to 7kW, so a 22kW three-phase charger charges no faster than a 7.4kW single-phase unit. Three-phase is only worth it if you also charge a vehicle that can use it.

The Dynamic FWD has a 19kWh Blade Battery, up to 103km of electric range and DC charging to 40kW. The Dynamic AWD and Premium AWD have a 35.6kWh pack, up to 152km and DC charging to 74kW. All three charge on AC at the same 7kW, so the AWD models simply take about twice as long at home.

It will charge the car, but slowly — a portable charger on a standard socket takes around 10 hours for the Dynamic FWD and over 19 for the AWD models. A wall charger cuts that to a few hours and adds scheduling, load monitoring and solar diversion, which the supplied unit doesn’t have.

No — it drives as a hybrid on petrol alone, with over 1000km of combined range. But the advertised fuel figures assume a charged battery, and with around 80–120km of real-world electric range, most NZ daily driving can be done without petrol if you charge at home.

Yes. The Blade Battery uses LFP chemistry, which is designed for regular full charging — unlike many nickel-based EV batteries. BYD in fact recommend periodically charging to 100% to keep the battery gauge accurate. Follow the guidance in your vehicle manual.
