Volkswagen ID.5 Charging guide

ID5 charging at home

Home charging options for the VW ID.5

The ID.5 comes with a domestic 8a plugin home charger designed to provide an 8-amp charging rate. This charger is often referred to as an “emergency charger” due to its extended charging time of 49 hours to fully charge the standard range model from 0 to 100%.

When fully charged, the ID.5 boasts an impressive range of 530 kilometres. If you’re looking to speed up your charging process at home the best option are the wall mount chargers that will add around 40km of range per hour of charging. All our wall mount chargers are compatible with the ID5

Estimated charging time below, from 20% charge up to 100%. Most people do not return home with 0% charge so we have allowed the 20% buffer.

Public charging the ID.5

There are two main ways of public charging the ID.5 in public. One of these is using ac power via a Type 2 charger. The other way is using dc fast charging.

D.C Fast charging. This connects via the Type 2 CCS port in the car and will charge the car from 0 to 80% in 1.5 hours on a 50kW charger and 40min on a 124kW charger.
No need to bring a cable with D.C charging as the charging station has this hard wired. To use these public stations download the following apps to
Chargenet App
Z EV charging
BP EV charging
Meridian EV charging App

Type 2 Public Charging. These chargers you find a super markets, malls, gyms, hotels and public carparks. Most of these chargers you need to bring your own cable.

Cable: We recommend a Type 2 to Type 2 22kW cable to make use of the 11kW charging. The car comes with a 16a or 11kW cable. This will limit your charging to 16a or 3.5kW on a single phase charger.

Note Some public charges have a Type 2 hard wired so a cable is not needed 100% of the time. If you already have a Type 1 charger at home we can supply an adapter so you can charge your car and Japanese import EV with the same charger.

ID.5 Home EV CHARGERS

VW ID5 Home chargers and cables

If you do not have 3 phase power at home like the majority of homes in New Zealand then we recommend getting the Smart EV charger 7kW charger. Its output suits most people’s needs.

The comes with a 16a Type 2 to Type 2 cable. If this is used with the 7.4kW wall charger you will be limited to 3.5kW or 16a charging. So we recommend going for the charger with the cable already attached. Or replacing the Type 2 to Type 2 cable with a 7kw or 22kw cable.
